THR +175 (Christmas Day, 2014)

December 25, 2014

Not much to say, other than I got the best present EVER 175 days ago.

The new hip is good. The recovery continues -- no pain, just occasional stiffness.

Merry Christmas to all... especially those who supported me this year.

5 Months + 1 Day

The recovery continues. Still some stiffness, etc. But there isn't much I can't do.

I moved into my new house in San Pedro. It's OK. I need more furnishings and the place needs a really good cleaning. Hopefully I'll get that done this weekend.

Not much more to report.

THR +150

December 1, 2014

So far so good.

I've wrapped up my first month in San Pedro and I'm finally moving into a house. Tomorrow. The house is at the top of a big hill which should help the hip and shed more weight.

My weight has plateaued (and even increased a bit) since I arrived on Hallowe'en. But I still walk everywhere and the hip feels more normal every day.

The shoulder is good, but my right hand still hurts a bit. Nothing major, but it's still not back to the way it was. I am able to use it without difficulty.

San Pedro is as crazy as it ever was. I really should blog about the antics of the people here, but they'd disappear me. Best keep quiet.

All-in-all, things are good. But I would like more work to keep me busy.

And so it goes.

The healing continues. That's good. Shoulder is much improved. Hand is... stiff. Hip is good.

I'm planning to start yoga in a few days.

Craploads of work keep me from enjoying the surroundings too much... but I still get the occasional chance to take it in -- especially before sunrise.

Here's a short update:

I've been busy here in San Pedro with work, trying to find a house and socializing. The hip has taken a bit of a beating from walking and tuktuk rides. I've actually had to take a bit of a break as I was experiencing some discomfort yesterday.

Other than that, all is good.

Things are coming along fine. I'm still a bit lax on the diet and physio, but I am walking around a fair amount.

The 'high school' drama continues in town. Such is village life. But I should have more news about housing soon. There are some good options, but lots of competition.

A group of us are heading to San Juan for wine and cheese today. Can't wait!

Today is my 4 month anniversary and so far, so good. The hip works well and seems to be adjusting to the 5000ft altitude here.

I went for a bit of a walk today, and although I was a bit stiff from physio yesterday, I had no problem navigating some hills and sketchy trails/roads.

My hunt for a house in San Pedro continues, but there are some interesting options. There's even one that would come without cost. That, perhaps, is the best solution.

Not much more to say than that.

Happy Anniversary to Me!

It was a beautiful day here in San Pedro:
Late Morning - Nov 3, 2014
I haven't really pushed the hip yet. Mostly I've just been getting settled and saying hi to people. I went to the BBQ on Sunday (11/2) followed by a very late night.

I spent today working and poking away at various tasks. And I did the full regime of new physio -- except balance board stuff. I've asked a local carpenter to build me one.

And so it goes...

I'm finally settled in San Pedro. It was a long journey, but the hip performed well. Flying was easy and I was careful to do lots of exercises while in the air.

The hardest part of the journey was the trip to Lake Atitlan. After a long day of shopping, we crammed into a pick-up truck for a three hour drive. The first two hours were fairly easy as the highway is quite good. But from the main highway to the lake, the road is pretty poor -- especially up and over the mountains.

Here's the route:
Guatemala City to Lake Atitlan
The hip was ok, if a little stuff after arrival.

That was Friday. Today is Sunday. So far so good. I've done some walking, but I haven't attempted any big hills, mostly because I want to acclimatise to the 5000 foot elevation.

The first time through airport security and my hip set off the alarm. After a pat down, I was good to go.

The first leg of the flight (Vancouver-Houston) went well. I tried to move the leg a lot and other than a little stiffness, it was fine.

I'm now wasting time in IAH, waiting for the next flight.

I had a crappy sleep due to aches and pains from cleaning the apartment. I'm just not used to bending and twisting like that. But I did manage to hit snooze a few times to add a few more minutes of sleep.

It was a stupid busy day.

I poked away at things in the morning before heading to the airport (via downtown) to get a rental car. Then home (via downtown) to finish packing and cleaning. I also fit in a haircut, a visit to the clinic about my shoulder (Naproxen will help), another trip downtown to drop food stuffs off, and more stuff.

It's now 9:45pm PT and I'm knackered. I also have to get up in 6 hours. Which is actually not too bad.

I had a restless sleep, waking up often. Stress of the upcoming trip and all the stuff I need to do? Probably.

But the right shoulder was BRUTAL. I'm going to try to pop into the walk-in clinic before I head out. That'll likely be Monday.

Busy day on Sunday/Funday.

First, coffee at Joe's on the Drive with REW. Then running around. I had to hit the North Shore to pick up some electronics to take down south.

Then I came home to pack. It's all going to my storage unit on Monday.

Before the sun dropped, I zipped over to Spanish Banks for a 2.5km walk. It was nice, but cold. And probably the last walk this year at this glorious place.

I think I've fallen in love with this stupid city all over again!

I had a fairly decent sleep, but I'm still suffering from stiffness and aches and pains. I think a lot of it is due to sitting behind the computer for long hours this week.

The good news is that I'm almost done all of my work for the month (1 more piece to go) and then I can take a week off. Of course I have to deal with cleaning the apartment and moving stuff into storage... and getting ready to fly out in less than a week. But, it's all manageable.

Most of the day was taken up with sorting stuff and pitching new stories. After doing physio, I headed out to Fets for a couple of drinks on the patio. Then home to chill.

Life is crazy busy as I get closer to departure day.

After a bad sleep (caused by the beer I had the previous night?), I spent most of the day inside, working. From 8am until 11pm -- with a break to go for a 2.8km walk.

Good thing the weather is so crappy. It has been raining constantly for some time now -- with just the odd break (see walk, above).

The hip is good, although I do have aches and pains. Nothing serious.

The shoulder is actually better -- no sudden sharp pain when I extend it. That's nice. The right hand is still sore, but I imagine that if I can take a week off writing, that should help. That's the plan for next week.

Long day!

I got up early, stiff and sore from Sunday's big walk. It's funny how the rib pain has returned. It's not terrible, but it's there. The shoulder was a bit better, though.

I rushed out the door around 9, stopping for a coffee downtown before returning the rental car to the agency on the North Shore. This time I went via the Lion's Gate Bridge which was shorter in distance but about the same in time.

I took SeaBus/SkyTrain back to The Drive and walked about 1.4km home.

Despite the sun poking through, I spent the day working for two different clients. I had hoped to hit a patio for some sun, but decided to just plow through. Maybe tomorrow.

Anyway, I got lots done. But there's much more to do in these final days...

Sunday, October 19, 2014

Big day today. It started early with me attempting to get some work done.

Around 10am, my pal Sheryl called to go for a walk. As the sun was out and I had a rental car, how could I say no?

I met her over in Vancouver's West End. Traffic, even at such an early hour on a Sunday, was a nightmare. This city is not a driver's best friend. I'm so glad I don't have to drive everyday.

Rather than complain about the current civic government and its idiotic transportation ideas, I'll focus on the positive!

I met Sheryl at Sunset Beach and we walked to Third Beach in Stanley Park. And then back to Sunset Beach. It was a glorious day and a nice way to spend a few hours.

We logged 8km (5 miles)... meaning that I'm almost ready to walk AROUND Stanley Park (10km). I'm hoping to do that before I leave in 11 days.

I came home in the early afternoon with the intention of working, but my buddy Steve called and wanted to go for coffee on The Drive. Nice! We went to Fets and hung out on the patio.

It was a weird weather day -- super warm (20C) and really humid.

Steve had to leave around 4, so I did some grocery shopping before returning home to do a little work. Some is better than none.

It poured this evening, but it seems nice now... although it's bedtime. Tomorrow, I have to take the rental back to the North Shore. And then I really have to get stuff done. Methinks time is going to start flying.

Here's some pictures from a great Sunday Funday:

Saturday, October 18, 2014

It was a busy day today.

I got up at 6 to work on stuff for next week. Didn't get nearly as much done as I'd hoped.

Then I had to get over to the North Shore to pick up a cheap car rental. That meant an "interesting" ride on the #20 bus, a SeaBus ride, and a ride on the #236 to Enterprise/North Van. That took a while.

After I snagged the car (with my buddy Randy) it was time to shop. First stop: Old Navy for cheap shirts. Second stop: The Crab Shoppe for halibut patties. And then all the way out to Ikea in Coquitlam. I needed some kitchen stuff -- knives -- for Guatemala.

After dropping off Randy, I headed home to start sorting through stuff (I'd pulled boxes of unknown stuff out of storage earlier in the summer). I took a bunch of old (and too small) clothes to a donation box.

It wasn't raining, so I felt obligated to hit to Spanish Banks. There's not many opportunities left.  I did a 3.5km walk and took some pictures:

Sunset is just 6:17pm

Look! A super expensive city!
And then it was night
After the beach, I headed home for a feed of sushi. I avoided wine for another day. It's surprisingly difficult.

The hip was a bit stiff today. I didn't do any physio (the physio dude said I needed to take days off). But I did get the walk in.

The shoulder was ok. No better, no worse.

Oh: I'm also having doubts about going back to Guatemala. No reason other than I'm really enjoying Vancouver.

And... suddenly it's 9:30pm and I'm ready to crash.

Sleeping is better than ever. I go down fast and I don't wake up in the middle of the night. I remember those post-surgery nights of having to use a bedpan or hobble to the bathroom. I hobble no more!

I do find it difficult getting up in the morning. I don't use an alarm, unless I have to. When I wake up, I could easily go back to sleep. However there is so much I need to do these days, that I can't stay in bed until I'm totally rested. Still, I'm logging 7-8 hours of solid sleep.

The shoulder is still bothering me and I'm not sure what the cause is. Tomorrow I'll talk to my physio guy about it.

The day started late.

I spent the night in the suburbs after a big Thanksgiving feast. Caught a ride home to the city around 2pm.

It rained all day, but I still managed to get out to the grocery store and bank. I ended up skipping physio (well, I did some, but not all), just to give my body a break.

I starting to get that overwhelmed feeling with departure just a few weeks away. It seems like there is SO much to do. But it'll get done. It always does.

This evening I caught up on some TV viewing and worked on a piece that's due tomorrow.

It doesn't look like I'll be doing any long walks as the forecast is crap:

The day started on a positive note: more downward movement in my weight. I've now lost 12.7 lbs since August 1.

It's nice to see the weight moving the right way, finally. It sure has taken a lot of work. Try living without wheat, sugar and processed foods. It's not easy.

Actually, the biggest thing is beer. I miss it SO much. I haven't had a beer or wheat since Aug 25.

The weather was dire this morning. Hard tropical rain. Cold. And the forecast wasn't very inspiring. It's definitely not summer.
It's beginning to look like departure time!
But then a funny thing happened. It stopped raining and the sun came out. The timing was perfect as I had to walk about 10 blocks to meet up with Randy and Murray for a broadcasters bitch fest at Cafe Deux Soleils.

We spent a couple of hours drinking coffee, eating vegetarian food and cursing the state of broadcasting today. The best years have come and gone -- of that there can be no doubt.

Following bitchy brunch, I headed home to start poking away at work and departure preparations. I don't leave for another 19 days, but it's good to get stuff done early. Or at least half-done!

The sunshine continued all afternoon, which was nice. It kept the apartment warm -- the central heating hasn't been fired up yet.

Around 5, I met up with Brent and we went for a drink at Fets and then we headed downtown to meet John at the Lions game.

Even though there was a Canucks game on at the same time, 31,000 people showed up to watch the Leos shellac the Ottawa RedBlacks 41-3.

Panorama of BC kicking Ottawa's ass. As it should be!
Next door in Rogers Arena, the Canucks beat Edmonton in a shoot-out. Sweet!

Have you noticed that this blog is getting to be less about my hip replacement and more about regular life? Me too.

It was a big exercise day. This morning I walked from my home just off Commercial Drive to Downtown Vancouver. I covered 6.25km on a nice fall day. Took some pictures, too.

Here's the route:

In terms of the hip, it's fine. There's still some stiffness, but nothing major. My right shoulder and hand are more bothersome! Thanks, crutches (I hope).

The weight was down, which was nice to see.

I spent the morning working and then had bad news from a major client that will significantly impact my income. Details to come.

So... I went for a 3km walk to clear my head -- which means I've walked 19km since last Friday. With short walks added, I've definitely covered more than 20km. I'm going to try and keep it up and even increase it.

In the evening I went to see the documentary Red Army with Brent and his buddy Allan at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It's about Russian hockey in the 70s and 80s. Fantastic! Here's the trailer:

Being back in my own home has helped me see how much I've healed in the last three weeks. From day to day, it's hard to tell. But now that I'm back to my regular routines, I notice how many things are easier.

A case in point: getting in and out of bed. It used to be tough and take some effort -- now I'm able to get up and out in a fluid motion, without a bunch of grunting and groaning.

Three weeks ago, I had to have my cane handy as not only a safety blanket,  I found I needed it occasionally. Now it just hangs on a peg in the hall.

Three weeks ago, I used to shuffle around the apartment, now I stride about with confidence. Except in the mornings, although yoga (next month) should help that.

Three weeks ago, I felt I had to be super cautious when showering. I'm still careful, but I'm not paranoid about falling.

And I bound up and down the stairs when doing laundry.

I still have the odd bit of pain and I often feel stiff. If I sit for too long, I tend to seize up. But I feel I'm very close to not even noticing I had my hip replaced. That will be the day when I can say I've truly recovered.

The weight seems to be moving in the right direction again. I've very close to 10 pounds lighter since coming home from the hospital. I had been this light before -- back in July. But the last few months I've see-sawed. Hopefully this is the start of a downward trend.

After eschewing wheat, sugar, processed foods and beer and increasing exercise I should think I'd be losing weight!

In fact, I've walked 16km in the last five days (including today) -- including the 4km Quarry Rock hike last Friday. And that's just the specific walks I do... the 16km doesn't include walking as part the average day.

My goal of dropping 50lbs by Christmas isn't going to happen. And that's OK. Perhaps the new goal will be my birthday, next April 26. Even if I'm down 20 or 30 from where I'm at today, I'll still be happy.

It's important. I'm older and I've been lucky. I've been given the opportunity to work on my health and fitness. I'd be a fool if I squandered the opportunity.

UPDATE:

I went for a nice walk up The Drive in the afternoon. It was a beautiful fall day.

In the evening I went for drinks with Jenn and Chris, friends from San Pedro and CBC respectively.

THR +92

Saturday, October 4, 2014

I'm a little stiff from the hike yesterday -- especially in the muscles around the new hip joint. I suppose that's to be expected.

No matter. I did some running today around with Brent (who's visiting from Belize). We had breakfast at Cafe Du Soleil and then I dropped him off at SkyTrain.

I headed back to the housesit house to do some cleaning and whatnot.
Home for the last three weeks
Tonight my final night in this wonderful, inspiring home. It's been a fantastic place to work and chill out. I am very appreciative of the opportunity. Thanks Clive and Carey!

I took some of my stuff back to my own home this afternoon. Then the sun popped out and that meant I had to hit Spanish Banks for a walk. I got there just in time to log 3.5km before the sun dropped. It was warm and beautiful:
The view of English Bay never gets old
I've really enjoyed the last few weeks since I've been able to be more active. And I've learned to love Vancouver again. For now, anyway.

It was a very good day.

Exercise: 3.5km walk, stairs, moving stuff. Physio if I get around to it!
