Note from Wendy, back in Winnipeg: I don't think this effect is caused by smog, I think it's caused by sand or dust in the air, mainly because we never saw sunrises and sunsets like this until January, when the harmattan blew into Ghana in a big way -- and because the sun looks like this even when you're on the beach miles and miles away from any kind of traffic. That's not to say that it isn't polluted in Accra -- just that pollution isn't the reason the sun looks like this.
